Clinical-Grade Accuracy, Consumer-Ready Simplicity
Discover how the SnugFit 3D O&P and EarCam 3D scanner app products deliver clinical-grade accuracy through two powerful 3D scan modules—FaceID sensor–based and rear camera–based scanning.
Dual Scan Modes. Unified Precision
The SnugFit 3D scanner apps include two scan modules to meet diverse needs across clinical and consumer settings:
-
Front FaceID Sensor–Based 3D Scan: Leverages Apple’s TrueDepth camera for high-accuracy scanning.
-
Rear Video Camera–Based 3D Scan: Enables 3D capture using just the standard iPad camera—no external hardware required.
Each module has been thoroughly tested to ensure it meets the accuracy requirements of orthotics, prosthetics, earplugs or earbuds, and custom-fit product applications.
FaceID Sensor-Based 3D Scan (SnugFit O&P 3D Scanner)
We used a ground truth 3D model obtained with an industrial 3D scanner (accuracy up to 10 microns). Each target was scanned 10+ times to ensure repeatability. The SnugFit O&P scanner then scanned the same target, and results were compared by computing mean error, variance, and visual slice overlays.
Test Platforms: iPhone 12, iPad Pro 11” (2nd Gen)
Test Models: Anatomical foot model, Upper torso model
Results Summary:
Model Average Error Mean Variance
Foot Model < 0.4 mm < 0.4 mm
Torso Model < 0.5 mm < 0.7 mm

Rear Camera–Based 3D Scan Evaluation (SnugFit O&P 3D Scanner)
A. Real Foot Repeatability Test
We scanned a real human foot 23 times using the SnugFit O&P 3D Scanner App's rear-camera scan module on a regular iPad (M4) (Note: All Apple devices have the same performance). Two physical markers were used to determine the ground truth foot length: 163.5 mm.
Test Results (in mm):
162.4, 164.2, 160.7, 161.1, 165.3, 163.8, 164.9, 163.8, 161.7, 163.8,
162.0, 164.2, 162.0, 163.3, 163.7, 162.8, 161.0, 163.4, 164.5, 165.6,
163.8, 164.5, 165.5
Mean Error: -0.3 mm
Standard Deviation: 1.7 mm
B. Foot Phantom 3D Overlay Test
We used an industrial 3D scanner to obtain high-accuracy (0.1 mm) foot phantom data, then overlaid it with the 3D data from the rear camera scan module.
Test Results:
-
Mean Error: –0.15 mm
-
Standard Deviation: 0.76 mm
This confirms that the rear camera–based scan module can deliver sub-millimeter accuracy for practical applications using only a regular iPad.
Rear Camera–Based 3D Scan Evaluation (SnugFit EarCam 3D Scanner)
We used an industrial 3D scanner to obtain high-accuracy (0.01 mm) 3D digital ear impressions, then overlaid it with the 3D results generated from the rear camera scan module of the SnugFit EarCam app.
Test Platforms: iPhone 15
Test Sample: 14 ear impressions
Test Results:
-
Mean Error: from 0.05 mm to 0.2mm
-
Standard Deviation: <0.35 mm
Test results vary depending on how a user scans the ear impressions. However, results show that the SnugFit EarCam 3D Scanner app can deliver sub-millimeter accuracy for ear impressions.
